SPRINGFIELD State Senator Ram Villivalam is leading legislation that would streamline implementation of the Northern Illinois Transit Authority Act.

“We transformed the future of public transit and provided funding that will propel the system for years to come last fall, thanks to the Northern Illinois Transit Authority Act,” said Villivalam (D-Chicago). “But our work continues to ensure this transition and implementation period is clear, effective and provides safe, accessible and reliable transit to our neighbors.”

House Bill 2335 would solidify and streamline the comprehensive reforms under the Northern Illinois Transit Authority Act. Signed into law in December, the Northern Illinois Transit Authority Act addresses the fiscal cliff that was expected to cause mass layoffs and reduced transit service in 2026 and 2027 with necessary reforms and a transformational $1.5 billion investment.

The law established the Northern Illinois Transit Authority, known as NITA, which will replace the Regional Transit Authority as the new entity overseeing the CTA, Metra and Pace. It streamlines transit governance alongside a slate of reforms securing an accessible, equitable, safe, reliable and integrated public transit system.

Ahead of the law’s June 1 effective date, Villivalam is leading House Bill 2335. The proposal would clarify dates and align implementation timelines to ensure the law can be administered effectively and consistently.

“We won’t stop working to ensure all Illinoisans have access to world-class public transit in their own backyard,” said Villivalam. “This is a positive step forward to secure strong coordination and oversight from the Northern Illinois Transit Authority.”

House Bill 2335 passed the Senate Transportation Committee Thursday.
